George Floyd, an African-American was killed by Minneapolis Officer a few days back. The black guy gave up on his life after begging for air to breath. The video of the cop pressing against his neck went viral, breaking out protests worldwide.
But, George Floyd isn’t the first black to have lost his life at the hands of police in the USA. Since long, world is seeing the black community being suppressed in America. People are losing their lives at the hands of white since long. But now it is time to stop and re-evaluate!
End of The White Supremacy
The recent incident has lead people around the world come together. Demonstrations and protests are being held out to show solidarity with the “black” man who was killed in the broad daylight.
Protesters in the USA even put their favorite brand’s outlets on fire, in order to remove white supremacy. Even the white in UK came out in groups to stand against this racism.
Protesters in UK tore down an old statue to show their anger. The statue belonged to a 16th century trader, Edward Colston, a guy who earned his wealth through selling black slaves.
The monument was placed in the middle of London back in 1895 and this is first time ever that people tore it down to record their protest.
From slavery to suppression of rights, blacks have always been seen as a lesser humans. This is why, the white officer did not fear of killing the unarmed George Floyd, knowing he might easily get away with.
Irrespective of the pandemic and boundaries of social contact, people around the globe including the UK have come out to demand justice. The falling of the slave trader’s statue is a clear indication of what people want.
People want justice! They want equality! People want black to be treated as equal humans!
Demand for Equal Rights
The protesters in Bristol used rope to tear down the monument, rolled it to the harbor and threw it in Bristol’s water. UK’s Home Secretary, Priti Patel labeled the act as “utterly graceful”. While Superintendent Andy Bennett in an interview said it was disappointing to see people act like this.
He also added, the officers at sight did the right thing by not stopping the protesters as it could have led to unrest and uncontrollable consequences.
Bristol’s police is now using the CCTV footage of the incident to find the culprits and arrest them. The country states a fair trial will be conducted to stop future acts like these.
Reports suggest that a petition has been drawn calling for installation of Paul Stephenson’s statue in the same place. The guy was known for his campaign in Bristol of racial rights in 1960s, but the decision is still pending.
Although, the motive of the demonstrators was legit but yes, their actions were questionable. This is one incident that has created a buzz of international media and until the black community is not given their rights, people from across borders will keep on protesting.
