As the virus has outspread, killing more than 239,000 people globally, Gates has used his fame and wealth to push for science-based approaches to end the epidemic.
For the Seattle area, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has started at home test program for corona-virus. Which is already testing 300 people a day in the city. Bill Gates says, ‘There is a lot we still do not know’.
CBS News reported this initiative is to be taken to help researchers interpret how the virus extends through the communities. The program is called ‘the Seattle Corona-Virus Assessment Network (SCAN)’.
In order to trail the virus and provide COVID-19 test results, people with or without symptoms are being tested in this program.
The researchers are aiming to find out the potency of social distancing measures and educational institution closures. Age, race, and zip code information is being collected in this program SCAN.
The Research Program
On signing up the scheme the Seattle residents, to able to see their results while at home, will be sent a self-swab kit and given access to the SCAN portal.
On the website of Gates Notes, Bill Gates said in a blog that alongside testing, research is also needed to help fight and reduce the epidemic.
He also said, ‘In any fight, it’s important to know your enemy. Unfortunately, in our battle against COVID-19, there’s a lot that we still don’t know’.
‘With tests in little provision in many parts of the world, including the US, it is unachievable to test everyone. More testing, of course, will help us answer them’, he added.
To permit residents to continue social distancing standard. To make sure they do not put others at risk by traveling, this program has been initiated.
This is the primary advantage of this program that it trims the risk of disclosing people or others to the infection.
SCAN was developed in partnership with King County’s public health agency to specifically trail COVID-19. This program initiated just after the first case was detected in the US.
The Program Dates Back to Year 2018
The program was initially set up in 2018, for flu surveillance to help track the spread of respiratory illnesses.
The 64-year-old confirmed that the program is being used to help research the spread of the virus. Not aiming to supersede already existent medical care.
Mr. Gates criticized the testing system and told CNN that, ‘The wrong people are being tested and any time you don’t get results in less than 24 hours, the value of the test is dramatically reduced. The access to that testing system is very unequal’.
Raikes, who has worked closely with Bill Gates for four decades, said ‘He is in his element right now’. He added, ‘Bill is a guy who believes in science and technology and the positive outcome that can have in the world’.
The head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Fauci, said, ‘The number of affected people will be probably doubled in the next several weeks’.
