Child trafficking is one of the biggest problems the world is facing till date. The mafia involved is huge and would take years to reach to the master-mind.
A case, certainly new in the field, was reported where babies in Iran were being sold on “Instagram”.
Government authorities in Iran reported that they had caught three people involved in the case.
The online baby selling mafia is growing in Iran. Recently, a 20-days old baby and a two month old were being sold online.
The Baby-Selling Mafia
Chief of Tehran Police, Hossein Rahimi said that they have recovered the two babies, but still looking for the third one.
According to Khabar Online Webiste, the babies were advertised for 400 million Iranian Riyals for a baby. And the price increased for older kids.
Upon investigation it was found out that the babies were bought from poor families. One was bought for 50 million Iranian Riyals while other for 100 million Iranian riyals.
Rahimi told ISNA that the mafia searched for poor families, bargained on the price and purchased the babies from them to be sold further.
Facebook spokesperson who owns Instagram stated that they do not support any activity that encourages human exploitation. Thus, the case was under investigation since they got hold of it.
Is Iran on Top of Human Trafficking list?
According to US State Department’s Annual Trafficking in Person Report, Iran stands 21st position on the list.
As per a report, the countries mentioned in the list are said to not meet the standards of eliminating trafficking. They are not making efforts to get rid of it, thus should do more.
Online platforms like Instagram and Facebook discourages content that may lead to adverse consequences.
It provides user with an option to report such content so that action can be taken against it. This is why, the culprits involved in selling of the babies in Iran were caught red-handed.
This not only led to discovery of the babies who were abducted/purchased but unrevealed the face behind the heinous act.
